The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth

The Fundamentals is a set of ninety essays published between 1910 and 1915 by the Testimony Publishing Company of Chicago, funded by the brothers Lyman and Milton Stewart and edited in turn by A. C. Dixon, Louis Meyer, and R. A. Torrey. Written by leading conservative theologians and churchmen of Britain and North America, the essays were a defence of orthodox Protestant belief against the higher criticism, Darwinism, and the religious movements of the day. Around three million individual volumes were mailed free of charge to pastors, missionaries, and Christian workers across the English-speaking world. The work gave its name to the movement later called fundamentalism.
