Julian of Norwich (1343–c. 1416), an anchoress enclosed beside the church of St Julian in Norwich. On 8 May 1373, expecting to die, she received sixteen shewings, and spent some twenty years thinking about what they meant. Hers is the earliest surviving book in English known to be written by a woman.
