Francis Turretin (1623–1687) was pastor of the Italian congregation in Geneva and professor of theology there for thirty-four years, and the last great systematiser of Reformed orthodoxy. His Institutio Theologiae Elencticae — theology argued question by question against its opponents — was the textbook at Princeton until Charles Hodge replaced it with his own, and Hodge said he never got over the loss. He is not an English Puritan, but he is the Continental theologian the English Puritans and their heirs read, and he is kept here with them.
