Joseph Alleine (1634–1668), assistant at Taunton, was ejected in 1662 and imprisoned for going on preaching. He kept preaching, and died at thirty-four with his health broken by prison. He left one book, and it sold in numbers no other Puritan work matched: twenty thousand copies of the first edition, fifty thousand of the second.
