Richard Sibbes (1577–1635), preacher at Gray’s Inn and master of St Catharine’s Hall, Cambridge, was called “the sweet dropper” for the tenderness of his preaching. He converted no one by terror. Richard Baxter was awakened by The Bruised Reed, and Baxter’s Call to the Unconverted awakened Joseph Alleine’s readers in turn — a line of descent that runs through most of this section.
