Thomas Brooks (1608–1680) served at sea as a chaplain in the Civil War, then at St Margaret’s, Fish Street Hill, and stayed in London through the plague and the Fire after his ejection in 1662. He writes in short, hammered sentences, piles image on image, and quotes everything; Spurgeon said that reading him was like walking among beds of spices.
