William Perkins (1558–1602), fellow of Christ’s College and lecturer at Great St Andrew’s in Cambridge, is the father of the English Puritan tradition — the elder to whom nearly everyone else in this section owes a method. He died before most of them were born, and his works outsold Calvin’s in England for a generation.
