The colloquy at which Catholic and Protestant theologians — Contarini, Eck, Gropper, Melanchthon, Bucer, and Pistorius — sought reconciliation. Agreement was reached on a formula of “double justification” (Article 5), but the colloquy broke down over transubstantiation, the authority of the Church, and papal jurisdiction, and neither Rome nor Luther accepted its results.
