Jeremiah Burroughs (1599–1646), preacher at Stepney and Cripplegate and one of the five Dissenting Brethren of the Westminster Assembly, was known for pressing the sweetest subjects in the plainest words. Richard Baxter said that if all the Independents had been like Burroughs the breach would never have widened. He died at forty-six, and most of what survives was printed from his hearers’ notes.
