Writings and Disputations relative to the Lord's Supper

Parker Society vol. 1 (1844). The bulk of the volume is Cranmer’s Answer unto a Crafty and Sophistical Cavillation devised by Stephen Gardiner (1551), reprinted from the final, most-corrected 1580 edition. As printed there it runs in five books, but not in numerical order - I, III, IV, II, V - each book opening with Cranmer’s confutation of the corresponding part of Gardiner’s Explication, which attacked the books of Cranmer’s original 1550 Defence in that sequence. Books III (Of the Presence of Christ) and II (Against Transubstantiation) are much the longest and are split into sized parts; the rest run as single notes. After the five books come the Answer to Richard Smith’s preface, a note of where Gardiner varied from other papists, the 1554 Oxford disputations, and the volume’s index. The volume closes with a genuine second work: the Latin Defensio Verae et Catholicae Doctrinae de Sacramento (Emden, 1557) - Cranmer’s own first, Latin, statement of the doctrine, in its own five books (Libri I-V). Printed section headings are kept inline throughout.
